Our first manufacturing process is for BDO, an intermediate chemical used in everyday products that include athletic apparel, running shoes, electronics and automotive applications.

We believe that our BDO is the first ever to be produced directly from renewable feedstocks. We have been producing BDO at demonstration scale since June 2011 at the plant of our partner, Tate & Lyle. Our technology is covered by multiple patents, including US patent #8,067,214B2.

We expect the first commercial-scale BDO plant that utilizes our processes to produce approximately 40 million pounds of BDO per year in a plant in Europe owned and operated by one of our partners, Novamont. Our goal is for this plant to begin production in 2013 and for larger commercial-scale BDO plants owned and operated together with our industry partners in the United States, Europe and Asia to begin production starting in 2014.

Major chemical companies have successfully produced downstream products using Genomatica’s BDO.

Genomatica is successfully producing BDO in 13,000-liter fermentation tanks.
